HOUSTON. MOVEMENT. PHOTOGRAPHY.

The story begins in Houston, where founder and creative director David Mena discovered breaking at thirteen. From his early teenage years through nineteen, the culture of movement, competition, music, and individuality became the foundation of his creative expression.

By sixteen, he was his high school's photographer, experimenting with music mixing, video editing, and visual composition. Around 2013, those interests evolved into modeling, personal styling, and independently directed photography. Architecture, dramatic shadows, geometric environments, and unconventional clothing became recurring elements of his work.

During these formative years, TOKYONOTJAPAN and FRANKHAVEMERCY became important influences. Both were already establishing distinctive creative identities through fashion and photography, introducing David to different possibilities of personal expression.

Frank introduced him to Y-3 and gave him his first mask, an accessory that became closely connected to the experimental styling he admired. Their independent approach to creativity encouraged David to continue developing his own perspective rather than simply following trends.

Houston became the starting point for a visual identity that would eventually develop far beyond the city.

BEFORE THE CLOTHING, THERE WAS MOVEMENT.

ASAKURA. ZOHAGDEN. NEW YORK. THE RETURN.

By his early twenties, David had begun developing the ambition to create a clothing label. Early identities such as ASAKURA, inspired by Japanese culture, and ZOHAGDEN, influenced by Copenhagen and his attraction to the letter Z, became outlets for experimentation with fashion, photography, and visual direction.

Y-3 was among his strongest early influences, shaping his appreciation for layered black clothing, technical footwear, masks, and unconventional silhouettes. Rick Owens later expanded his understanding of volume and avant-garde proportions, while ACRONYM continues to influence his interest in functional technical design.

In 2016, David saved his money and relocated to New York City, where he lived until 2019. Through modeling, self-styled photography, and working with emerging labels, he developed a broader understanding of fashion as both artistic expression and an independent industry.

During those years, his friendship with Josh and Corey of Richard and Grace provided valuable insight into the creative and business sides of a clothing label. Spending time with them and helping at one of their pop-up events allowed him to experience firsthand how an independent fashion brand operates beyond the images.

Nearly a decade later, David remains in contact with Josh, whose friendship, creative direction, and entrepreneurial journey continue to inspire him. Those relationships remain an important part of his New York experience.

Following a difficult period that included four years in the Texas prison system, David returned home with a renewed perspective. Reading, reflection, and eventually learning the technical discipline of welding strengthened his appreciation for precision, patience, and consistent work.

The ambition to design never disappeared. What began as early concepts gradually returned with a clearer purpose: to transform years of creative experience into something physical and lasting.

THE DIRECTION CHANGED. THE VISION REMAINED.

APRIL 2026. THE EMERGENCE OF Э Л И Т А.

In early April 2026, more than a decade of creative exploration finally came together under one name: Э Л И Т А.

While revisiting an older photograph David had taken in Manhattan, something clicked. Years of personal styling, photography, early concepts, and creative ambition began to feel connected. It was the moment he decided to move forward fully and give that vision a definitive identity.

His longstanding fascination with Eastern European culture, including Cyrillic typography, Slavic languages, music, photography, and architecture, contributed to the name's visual direction. Written in Cyrillic and pronounced Elita, the identity brings together international influences while remaining rooted in David's Mexican American heritage and Houston upbringing.

MONTERREY. A RETURN TO THE CULTURE.

Э Л И Т А has also begun establishing a presence in Monterrey, Mexico, where the brand sponsored a breaking event alongside David's longtime friend and collaborator Omar.

The sponsorship represented a connection to the culture that first shaped his creative identity. Together, they intend to continue supporting breaking events and creative initiatives in Monterrey, developing a lasting relationship with the community.

EASTERN EUROPE. THE ARTIST CONNECTION.

The house's international direction has also taken shape through its collaboration with KEELSE, a Belarusian music artist whose experimental sound and creative identity align with the world of Э Л И Т А.

What began through music developed into an ongoing artistic collaboration. The brand has created a custom hoodie and trouser set specifically for KEELSE, incorporating its Cyrillic identity and personalized artist detailing.

This represents the first of many intended custom artist projects, connecting independent music, fashion, and creative expression across different countries.

THE NEXT CHAPTER.

In 2026, Э Л И Т А began moving beyond concepts through its first embroidered garments, artist collaborations, OPTICAL 001 eyewear development, and explorations in sculptural technical clothing.

From Houston to Monterrey and through creative relationships extending into Eastern Europe, the house continues to develop an identity shaped by movement, music, photography, architecture, and individual expression.

Э Л И Т А was established in 2026. Its foundation was built over more than a decade, and the work is only beginning.
